I want to tell you something that God really expects from you as His Child.
He wants you to Grow Up!
Of course, you will start your Christian walk as a spiritual baby but God does not expect you to stay that way. You must grow spiritually, build yourself up, and mature in the things concerning it. He expects this from you because everything you need to become great in God, God has already given them to you. From God’s angle, there’s no reason you should not grow There are 4 steps to growing up Spiritually and I will be sharing them with you very soon!
4 Steps to Growing Up Spiritually
1. You must be a Person of Prayer
This is non-negotiable. I have seen a lot of people sneer at prayer and attribute it to a certain type of people called the ‘prayer warriors’. They say excessive prayers are not for them, or that prayer is not just for them.
What we need to understand is that every believer is supposed to be a prayer warrior! Yes, every believer is called to be an intercessor. Sadly, a lot of us don’t do so, and we end up growing cold about the things of God. You cannot be a person of prayer and not be on fire for God. You cannot be a person of prayer and struggle with loving God. Prayer lights a fire in your heart, especially prayer in the Spirit. You are edified through prayer…
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, (Jude 20)
You build yourself up in your faith through prayer and so it would be a joke for you to assume you can grow spiritually without prayer.
If you have never been a prayer person, this is not to condemn you but to stir you up to build a habit of prayer. You don’t necessarily need to aim for 3 hours at first. You can start with as low as ten minutes, and as you get used to it, you increase the time progressively till you make a habit of spending time in prayer. This is what helped me, I tell you. I could barely pray for 5 minutes at a point in my life and now I cannot do without it.
p.s I am starting a series on prayer this coming month and I will be going deep into the basics of prayer as well as share how to build a prayer life (with practical), So if you are interested, you definitely want to join my mailing list, so that you can be alerted when I start
2. Have a rich Bible Study Life
You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15)
Something you must know about spiritual growth is that the growth components all work together in making you a mature Christian and so, you cannot do one thing and leave the others out and expect to become a full-grown Christian. Yes, you will grow to an extent but you will be lacking.
Take, for instance, if you decide to pray and not read the Bible, you may grow in your zeal for God and hearing God’s voice, but you will not have personal knowledge of God because this is what the word of God does among others, it helps you have a deep knowledge of God and I assure you, God wants to be known by you. Can you truly boast of intimacy with someone you don’t really know? This is how it is for God.
Tips for having a rich Bible study life
- Be intentional, have a time dedicated to it
- Have a journal and pen for taking notes (don’t overthink notes writing. It can be a passage you write down, which you feel God is really speaking to you with. You can also write what you sense Him saying, or your thoughts on a verse that attracted your attention, it can also be your questions. Just don’t overthink it, no one is checking your notes. You are keeping it for your own benefit
- Actually, read the Bible
- Find a good translation to read (I highly recommend NLT)

3. Fellowship With the Spirit and Other Believers
You are not meant to be a lone ranger as a believer.
You are called into a life of fellowship and togetherness, first with the Holy Spirit and then with other believers. It can be quite overwhelming to fellowship with others if you are an introvert, but the truth is that you need it. It will be so easy to backslide and become a lukewarm believer when you are just being a lone ranger. This is not me negating the secret place. I love the secret place and I value my alone time with God above everything else. Even as a person of the secret place, you’ll realize that you still need others to worship God with and be accountable to.
The church is a good place to start with. Join a small group in the church, attend their meetings. Also, go to church regularly! Yes, Christianity is not about church-going but Jesus built the church. We are a body and we need each other. We need to stir each other up and encourage each other.
The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” (1 Corinthians 12:21)
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (vs 27)
I know that you probably may have been hurt before, because of Church, and that really is terrible but don’t let it make you make your mind up about the body of Christ. There are still many great churches out there in which the members love each other, the accurate word of God is preached and Jesus is the center. Find such churches, and be active in them.
Also, fellowship with your friends no matter how little they may be, you can be the one to start it and you all can just pray once a week or as regularly as you would like. There is so much power released when believers pray together. Jesus also promises to be there in the midst of such fellowships.
For where two or three gather together as my followers,[a] I am there among them.” (Matt 18:20)
4. Kingdom Service
Kingdom service means promoting the purposes and Interests of God on the earth. Kingdom service has three divisions:
Soul Winning and establishment
…and He who wins souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30 NKJV)
Every believer is called to bring souls to Christ. This simply means preaching the gospel to unbelievers. We need to understand that there is such a thing as eternal separation from God and a lot of people will go to hell if we do not preach the gospel to them. Sure, you may not be able to go to other countries for mission work, you may not even have the time to go out to the streets, but you do not have any excuse to not bring men to Christ.
Are there unbelievers in your workplace or school? You have a responsibility to preach the gospel to them. So many people die each day, and your unbeliever friends can be one of them, do you understand the gravity of not preaching the gospel to them?
If you cannot go out, you can use your skills, your platforms. Some of us spend a lot of time on our phones and social media. We can use that as an opportunity to spread the gospel. The gospel can be basically preached in three sentences! (if you are not explaining it in-depth). You can tell someone about Jesus with three sentences. So post it on your social media. You may not be a writer but just simply sharing the message of the gospel regularly on social media, and also things that can help someone else grow in their faith (like a bible verse or a Jesus-based Quote) will go a long way
It is irresponsible to not preach the gospel and give people a chance to get saved. When Jesus was about to leave, He didn’t give us instructions to become successful, or make money or be the most talented person in the world, He said preach the gospel. And so, If you are not so successful and you preach the gospel, in Jesus’ eyes you are on the right track, and your reward is in eternity.
Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever. (Daniel 12:3)
I see this verse as a continuation of Proverbs 11:30
Service in God’s House
Part of the kingdom responsibility of every believer is Service in the house of God. This is something I did not understand for a long time. Whatever way you can be of service, whether in the choir, or in cleaning, or decorating and organizing things. Find a way to serve and serve willingly!
Financial resources are important for kingdom activities and so it is important for you to make kingdom investments. Apart from your first fruits, tithes, and offerings, also regularly sow financial seeds into the work of God. Of course, if you are broke like me, you don’t have millions to invest in God’s work. However, I tell you, God still appreciates the little you have to give, He looks at the heart and not the amount. Sacrificial giving pleases God so much.
41Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.
42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.[a]
43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions.
44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-44)
How to Tell If You Are Growing Spiritually
1. Your degree of conformation to the image of Christ
This simply means how much you are becoming like Christ. We are supposed to become more like Christ every day, and if that is happening, you are not growing up Spiritually. If you have been a Christian for a long time, and the fruit of the Spirit is not evident in your life, then something is wrong with your growth.
2. Your Level of Spiritual Understanding
If you are a Christian and your understanding of spiritual things does not increase progressively, then you have not been growing. If a one-year-old child acts ignorantly, it can be ignored because they don’t have the same level of understanding as grown-ups. But if a grown-up man acts like a child, then it would be evident that something is wrong with such a person. We are expected to have more knowledge and understanding of how the world works as we grow up. The same is expected of the things of God.
There will be a lot more on this very soon because I feel it is important that our growth is evident as time goes on.
Till then, let me know which growth component you are struggling with so that I can write a blog post based on it to help you. Your growth is important to me, and it is my earnest prayer that you all mature in the things of God.
