I’ll start this post on keeping in step with the spirit by telling you a bit about what happens during an American wedding reception as told to me by an American Pastor.
The newlyweds are called to the dancing floor to dance. After a while, couples that have been married for just a year would dance as well, then couples of 5 years would be called too to dance, then ten years, then 20 and it goes on till the oldest couples in the room are called to dance. In that moment, the most remarkable thing happens…(keep reading to find out)
I chose to use this story because it gives a really perfect picture of what I like to call dancing with the Spirit. My way of saying, keeping in step with the Spirit or Walking by the Spirit. Let us do a little Bible Study first
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. (Galatians 5:16-17)
As believers, we have two choices really,
- We walk by the spirit
- We gratify the desires of the flesh
And so, it is not enough for us to say we want to stop gratifying the desires of the flesh, we have to walk by the spirit. You see, our flesh opposes God. The only way we can stop letting the flesh have power over us is by keeping in step with the Spirit.
Do you want to live in a way that honors God? Do you want the fruit of the Spirit to find full expression in your life? Do you want to learn to stop yielding to the desires within you to do things that are wrong? Then darling, you need to keep in step with the Spirit.
But it will take your listening to Him, yielding to Him and obeying Him.
I will not lie to you, these things take time. You don’t just become an expert in keeping in step with the Spirit overnight but rather, overtime. This is where the dancing part comes in.
To finish my story from before,
At the time when all the couples are on the dancing floor, you will notice the most remarkable thing. The older couples are almost perfect in dancing together, while the younger couples may miss a step together and step on each other’s’ foot. The difference between the dance of a fifty year old couple and that of the newlyweds will be so evident. It will be obvious that the newlyweds have not been doing this for long. Not because they both don’t love each other but because time has made the older couple become used to each other.
Only God knows how many times they must have danced together leading to that moment. They would both be able to dance in perfect harmony. They have done this like, a billion times. They know each how their spouse dances and they’ve been able to adjust to each other with time. The newer couple however…
They will mess it up a bit, not because they don’t know how to dance or they don’t love each other, but because it takes time to get used to a person.
The Holy Spirit is a person and so you will need to get used to Him too. Someone who has spent their life keeping in step with the Spirit will find it easier yielding to Him than someone who just started. Yielding may seem hard at first. Unlearning things of the flesh like jealousy, selfishness, anger is not a one day job. But I guarantee you, when you dedicate your life to keeping in step with the Holy Spirit, you will drop these things eventually.
Physical dancing is not my thing and I’ve reached this point in my life where there are far more important things than learning to dance. I’ve accepted my fate and I know I am a terrible dancer. I’ve tried and tried to learn to keep in step with the rhythm of the music and I have come to a conclusion that I’m not just cut out for dancing. I’m one of those people who are anxious about their wedding day because, how will I dance knowing that everyone will be watching me? I told this to someone and she said I just need to go for dancing classes before the wedding. I smiled at her because I knew she meant well, and I will do as she says to fulfill all righteousness, but I really do feel as if it would be a waste of money.
There is no such hopeless case with the Holy Spirit.
My attitude to physical dancing should never be your attitude when it comes to dancing and keeping in step with the Spirit of God. When you are ready to be serious with Him, your journey of keeping in step with Him begins.
Your Journey of Keeping in step with the Spirit
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25)
1. You will need to be dedicated and determined
In dancing with the Spirit, you may miss a step, fall. But do you give up? Never!
Take his hand, rise up and keep at it. Don’t quit because it’s hard, do not also quit because it’s taking time. Remember that these things take time
2. Recognize His Lordship
Now the Spirit is that Lord… (2 Corinthians 3:17)
To even start keeping in step with the Spirit, you must understand the Lordship of the Holy Spirit. He must be obeyed. In fact, His voice will not be powerful in your life until you recognize His Lordship and consider Him worthy to be obeyed. The basics of a really good dance is that you let Him lead, then you keep in step. It will start with the little things, when He tells you to give to someone, check up on someone or to pray for the person. Your obedience in those little things, those little nudges He gives will determine your hearing Him for the big things, the big decisions you will make.
3. Humbly submit to Him
So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. (1Peter 5:6 NLT)
Pride and the Holy Spirit do not go together. You will have to acknowledge your inadequacy and never act like you know better, because you don’t. Humble yourself and let Him lead you.
4. Prayerfully chew on the Word for guidance
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105 NLT)
5. Most Importantly, There is no Keeping in Step with The Spirit Without Fellowship
you must spend time in communion with the Holy Spirit in order to know more about Him and learn from Him. It is so important that you spend time in the secret place. Prayer is a necessity for living the Spirit life and it’s so important that we pray in the Spirit (more on this later). You must spend time praying, worshipping, and in the word!
You cannot be in sync with someone if you do not even spend time with the person and it’s the same for the Spirit. To keep in step with Him, you cannot downplay the secret place. There is no keeping in Step with Him without fellowship
How Does The Holy Spirit Lead?
This really confused me for a long time in my Christian walk. I would be so confused when I read a book or hear a preacher talk about listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit. “How does He speak?” was always the question in my head.
I started to believe He would speak to me the same way any other person would, through an audible voice. It was either that or a dream. When I started to pray for directions for things, I would be so disappointed that He didn’t speak to me in those ways. It made me conclude that perhaps God doesn’t want to talk to me, that He only spoke to a select few.
That was a total lie because God was always speaking to me through a knowing in my heart, my inward witness.
I realized that some of the things I needed direction for, I already knew what to do deep down but I felt unsure because I truly believed that if God did not speak in the way I expected, He wasn’t speaking to me
You have to lose those expectations. Yes, God actually talks in different ways and you can check some of them out here. But what I need you to know now is that as a child of God, you are led of the Spirit of God.
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children[a] of God. (Romans 8:14 NLT)
You have an inward witness and you can trust the knowing in your heart. Don’t say God doesn’t speak to you, go and read your Bible! He leads us primarily through His Word and those nudges the Holy Spirit puts in our heart. When you read your Bible and pray in the Spirit more, you will train your Sprit to be sensitive to His voice.
You may not see the burning bush like Moses did, or see visions and dreams but you have the Word of God. The Word of God is trustworthy, you can find the answers to the questions of your life in it. By the Spirit, you can know what to do at every single point in time
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. (psalm 12:6)
A Word For you
“Great men of God were mere men that mastered this art of dancing with the Spirit of God. As many as are willing and obedient enough to learn keep in step with the Spirit, their lives will produce much fruit and He will use in even greater ways than He used this men”
Only Children of God are led by the Spirit of God.
To be a child of God, you must be saved. Only then will the Holy Spirit live inside you and you will have eternal life. This is such a beautiful thing and if you are not saved or you don’t even know what this means, please click here to learn more.
