How To Approach The Presence of God

Learning about and having a passion for the Secret place is one thing. Approaching God and Dwelling there in His Presence is an entirely different ballgame.

If you haven’t read last week’s blog post on the secret place, you might want to check it out here

In the secret place, you experience the presence of God and trust me, you don’t want to go in there nonchalantly. You wouldn’t even go to the presence the president of your country in your pajamas. Joseph in the Bible was presented to Pharaoh only after He had shaved and cleaned up. These are only earthly authorities.

How much more the monarch of the universe?

And no, I don’t mean that you should wear a suit or your best clothes to go to the secret place, which would be so ridiculous.

I’m talking about heart postures and attitudes to His presence. We know how particular God is about the heart, He looks at that and not your physical appearance. The state of your heart is so important in the secret place. Now that we are clear, let us begin with our list of heart postures to take in the secret place.

 1. Honesty in His Presence

Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10: 22)

I’ve had to learn and relearn honesty with God throughout my life

I’m a recovering people-pleaser. I do not like showing people my ugly, it scares me so much. I don’t even really know how to pour out my heart to someone. I carried this mindset into my relationship with God. I did not want him to see my ugly and so I would go into the secret place not being truly sincere to Him.

Some of us are like this, we go into his presence and we are so eager to please him and we say a lot of things we don’t truly mean from our hearts. We pretend before God, using our mouths to proclaim everything is fine, we trust Him totally and we believe He is good always. But sometimes we don’t mean what we say.

We must come to the point where we are totally honest with God in the secret place. He already sees our hearts no doubt but there’s nothing more liberating than saying the truth. It is a way to make progress in the secret place because when we tell God what’s truly bothering us, what sins we are struggling with, the Holy Spirit can now shed more light on the true problem and how to fix it. It becomes easier for you to identify the lies you have been believing about God and fight them with His word.

It is common knowledge when you share a problem you are one step closer to solving it. So let’s learn to be honest in the secret place and do away with those lies that we have to have it all together when we are in His presence. Instead of worrying about being polished enough for Him, let us let His presence do the polishing. Adam hid from God but we are not Adam, we no longer have his nature. We now have the nature of Jesus! Jesus was and is always honest with God.

He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” (Matthew 26:39)

If this is not honesty, then what is?  He did not try to pretend that all was well and say, “Abba, your son is ready! Bring it on! Let your will be done” He said the truth but more than that, He wanted God’s will to be done and He said so too. If you read further, you’d see that an angel was sent to comfort Him. God cares about what we are going through and He will comfort us, but we’ll have to be honest and upfront with Him, tell Him where you’re at. Remember the secret place is a love affair between you and God, no love affair thrives when there is no honesty between the people involved. We should bare our hearts to God (though in reverence and submission like Jesus).

God is not afraid of your honesty! When you are honest with God. He will equip you. Are you having a hard time believing that God can handle all your good, bad, and ugly moments? Well, try Him. God can handle everything and more. He’s God duh

2. FAITH for the secret place

It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible. (Hebrews 11:27)

QUESTION: How do you keep your eyes on someone invisible?

FAITH!!!

I guess the struggle most of us have in staying in the secret place is that technically, we are ‘alone’. It seems almost ridiculous to talk with someone and be intimate with them when we can’t see them. But we are not natural men guys, we are spiritual men and we know that all that our eyes can see is not all there is.

For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)

There you have it. The secret place isn’t an exception to the verse. The Bible clearly says that He that comes to God must believe that He is.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

Honestly, just go and read the entire chapter. (Hebrews 11). Very powerful chapter, I know you’ve read it before but go and read it again. I know why I’m saying this.

I know sometimes it’s quite discouraging when we pray and it seems like our prayers aren’t even leaving the room. No burning bush or Angel Gabriel is coming immediately. Honestly, if this were the case everyone would want to be in the secret place. But that is just not how God works. As numbers are to science, so is faith to the Kingdom of God. So even though it seems like nothing is happening or you don’t see anything extraordinary happening, still believe that He’s there and you’re not alone. Remember you have God Himself living within you.

Faith truly pleases God and so if we are going to be people of the secret place, we must be people who understand that God is truly more than the eyes can see. You will not be discouraged or disappointed because He does not come physically come to your bed and sit and talk with you. (For a long while this was my story). Now even though I desire all these things, I live by faith and when I am in the secret place to meet with God, He’s there. Periodtttt

3. Boldly Come into the Presence (Hebrews 4:16)

Yes, this is very important, remember how last week, I talked about the secret place being a privilege rather than an obligation? You can click here to see more.

A child of God should not go beggarly into the secret place. To emphasize this, I’ll tell you this story:

During the American civil war, this soldier was granted permission to seek a hearing from the president. However, when he got to the white house, he was refused access and sent away. He went and sat in a nearby park. A little boy in the park noticed how sad he looked and went to ask him what happened. The soldier found himself telling the little boy everything. When he was done, the little boy told him to follow him. They went to the white house, around the back. Even the high ranking officials let them pass. Finally, they got to the presidential office. Without knocking, the young boy opened the door and went straight in. Abraham Lincoln was there with his secretary of state and asked the boy,

“What can I do for you, Tad?”

“Dad, this soldier needs to talk to you”

The soldier had access to the president through the son. So also you have access to the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ. As a believer you are also a child of God, hence you have access to the presence of God!!!

Like how cool is that?

You have access!!! So act like it when you come to the secret place. You are royalty.

4. Humility To Worship

Let’s take a look at this passage,

9Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else:

10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector.

11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer[a]: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18: 9-14)

Confidence is not Pride! Pride is not confidence!!!

As a believer, you know that we are not made righteous by anything we have done. Our salvation is by grace not by works. So we must never come into God’s presence feeling like we did it! No, it is all by grace and grace alone! Always remember how God saved you and praise the glory of His grace(Ephesians 1:6). We must also never feel too big too because of what or who we are. Remember we are in the presence of God Almighty, Jehovah. It will forever be a privilege. David said,

Even the 24 elders, the stakeholders of the kingdom, cast away their crowns to worship Him. How much more us? Don’t come with your crown (your achievements, position in life) when you come before the presence of God.

5. Gratitude, Your Literal Gate Pass

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. (Psalm 100:4)

The Bible spells it out plainly that access to His presence is thanksgiving. Never forget this the next time you go to the secret place.

Next week, we will be wrapping up this series on the secret place so we can move to other topics here but we are in no way done with this. Expect more exciting things to come. Trust me, you are going to love it! If you haven’t signed up for our newsletter, now is the time to do so. Don’t say I did not tell you, the form is below.

I’ve only mentioned 5 ways to access the presence. Do you believe there are more? List them out in the comment section so you can help others grow. If you’re comfortable, I want to know if you can relate to having problems with these ways. I’ve had a problem with all these listed above and I have had to unlearn a lot! So please share.
