How To Be A Person of The Secret Place In A Busy World

Mary of Bethany is a remarkable woman! We have a lot to learn from her about the secret place.

Please note that Quiet time and secret place are used interchangeably in this post.

Last week I spoke about Martha and how our worries and busy lives affect our Secret place with God. You can read it up here. Today we will be focusing on Mary.

There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42 NLT)

But only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:42 AMP)

That one thing is sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to Him. It is spending quality time with Him.

Just in case you have ever felt conflicted or like there are other more important things to do. Today, I’m calling your attention to the fact that Jesus said that only one thing is necessary and that is the secret place. Yes, He said it with His mouth!

So What Is The Secret Place?

He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High… (Psalm 91:1)

The secret place is a place of intimacy with God, where we can meet with God one-on-one. It is how Intimacy and communion are achieved in the life of a believer. You can also call it your quiet time.

It is not a corporate fellowship, as important as that is.

It is equally not the morning devotion or prayer meetings you have with your family.

It is also not a physical location, although we can consecrate a place to be where we meet with God daily. It is rather a spiritual state, a heart posture that makes you access where God is. You can only be a person intimate with God, a person of His presence if you are a person of the secret place.

The Secret Place in a Busy World

The concept of a secret place is quite lost in our busy world today. We are busy people with busy lives and so for us, the cares of this life are much more real than God. It is very easy to put God in the background, as we wake up from our beds and the first thing that comes to mind is our schedule. The assignments, the classes, the meetings, and God doesn’t hold a place in our hearts. Or some of us may even remember Him and in a bid to fulfill all righteousness, we do some rushed morning devotion and call it our secret place.

I used to do this a lot, spending time with God used to be a way for me to remove the guilt of not doing so from my life. I would wake up and read a chapter of the Bible and I would feel restless if it was longer than I expected.

Sometimes, I would intentionally read Psalms 117 (the shortest chapter in the Bible if you didn’t know) and then my prayer would be,

“God, thank you for today, bless me, protect me…” Then I would move on to matters arising, the ‘real’ issues for the day.

Some of us may have stories like that. We spend more time brushing our teeth in the morning than with God and then when we don’t spend time with God, we console ourselves with ‘God doesn’t condemn us’. I want to even speak on this a bit.

Of course, God doesn’t love you less if you don’t spend time with Him. He doesn’t judge or condemn you. But carrying this mindset all the time and using it as an excuse never to spend time with Him is not the right thing to do, as a Christian. God wants our time and denying him that is like hurting Him

These Two Things Changed My Attitude Towards the Secret Place:

  • The Secret Place: An Obligation?

Spending time with God is not an obligation, it is THE greatest privilege of our lives. That we get to spend time with Yahweh.

And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10: 19-22)

Hallelujah!!! The blood of Jesus has given us access and the ability to have a relationship with God.

We are justified as believers and now have the audacity to stand before God guiltless. We can talk to God as one talks to a friend, the question is,

What do we do with this access?

Imagine you’re watching a TV show, where someone wins a game and a very rich person takes that person to the mall, gives the person an enormous cart and tells the person to take everything they want, everything in 30 minutes.

Imagine if that person only picks little things like toothpaste, soap and then the person passes the clothes section, picks up like 2 dresses, passes the junk section, and takes only a bar of chocolate instead of shoving the whole cupboard onto the stall. Then goes to the cashier before the time is even up to checkout. How would you feel watching something like that? Wouldn’t you scream at the TV and wish it was you so that you could take everything? Wouldn’t you just want to beat that person up?

Most importantly, how would you feel if you were the rich man? I’m talking about someone who’s so damn rich and kind who genuinely wants to give, probably Bill Gates.

That’s how it is when we go to the secret place, just concerned about our lives, bread and butter and never pausing to just enjoy his sweet Presence and soak in His glory and have our hearts transformed, never listening to Him. We even set the time to 30 minutes but then we become so restless, always checking the time, and at a point, we get tired and we leave before the time is up, before God even gets a chance to shower you with all the goodies in his loving presence. How does that make God feel?

The Secret Place is a privilege and we should make it our number one priority in life, no matter what.

  • What then, should drive you to the secret Place?

Not duty, not fear, not just when you are in trouble. Just love. Let what drives you to the secret place be His love for you and your love for Him. It’s a love affair for God’s sake!!!

Always be eager to soak in His love, let His presence be your source of life, your resting place. Let Him mean the world to you. Come with an attitude of love and total adoration like Mary of Bethany.

How You Can Intentionally Be a Person of the Secret Place

1. Abandon all Distractions, Give God your Time

Mary saw that in this there was only one necessary thing and she saw even her normal duty, serving, as a distraction. This is not an excuse for laziness or irresponsibility though. This is a matter of priority, and it’s just a simple rule that you give more priority to the important things first. So, in your life, you may have a lot of things doing, but first, make it a priority to spend time with God. If you have to wake up an hour earlier to do this, then please do. If you have to sleep later, that’s fine. If you must steal some time away from a busy day to just get refreshed in His presence, why not? Jesus must always be a priority.

Don’t just visit the secret place, dwell there.

2. Listen to Him

I advise you to start your time with Jesus by just studying His Word because it’s more important that He speaks to you than you speak to Him, but anything’s fine. There’s no clear cut itinerary for being in the secret place. Just make sure you spend time in the Word while you’re there. Devotionals and Bible plans are great and I love them, but they should not just be the only source of your reading the word. Take the books of the Bible, study them. You can start with the gospels.

3. Pray and Worship!

Because Prayer is the key!!!

In subsequent blog posts, I will speak more on Bible Study, Worship and Prayer so let me not go into this now.
